The documentary Black Sand which tells the story of the horror caused by the irreversible harm caused by sand mining at Alappad, was directed by acclaimed Hollywood director Sir Sohan Roy. Abhini Sohan Roy produced the documentary. The research and screenplay for this are done by Harikumar Adiyodil. Famous music director Biju Ram provided background music. Johnson Iringole handled the editing, and Tinu handled the camera. Editing, coloring, and graphics are by Mahesh, Bijin, and Arun. Arun Sugathan and Lakshmi Atul are the executive producers of the movie.

Black Sand earned over sixty accolades in its first year of existence, including one from the central government, and qualified for the Oscars in the "Best Documentary Category" in 2021.

The documentary won several awards, including Best "Nature Documentary" at the Central Department of Culture's Mumbai Cine Film Festival, Baba Sahib Ambedkar International Film Festival, Mumbai International Film Festival, Best Documentary Festival presented by the London-based "Best Film Awards," L'Age d'Or International Arthouse Film Festival, Rajasthan Film Festival, Calcutta International Film Festival, World Film Carnival in Singapore, Tagore International Film Festival, Prague International Film Festival in Czech Republic, Gona Film Festival, Nawada Film Festival, Paris Film Festival, San Diego Movie Awards, Madras Independent Film Festival, Uruvati International Film Festival, Hodu International Film Festival, Indo-French International Film Festival, International Motion Picture Festival

With its realistic portrayal of the state's illicit sand mining syndicates, "Black Sand" has garnered critical acclaim for its stark analysis of the social, political, and environmental ramifications of unchecked black sand extraction. The award-winning documentary, which will be available on YouTube globally, is expected to spark new conversations about the divisive topic that has long affected India's southern coastal regions.

Black Sand documentary which created a stir at both national and international film festivals, is available on YouTube at a time when the problem of black sand mining is returning to prominence in Kerala. Black Sand premiered on February 8, 2024, at 6:00 PM on Sir Sohan Roy's official YouTube channel. The translation of the film released in English and Malayalam languages was done by Neha and Mrinalini.

The makers predict that since the movie is now widely available on YouTube, it may spark new debates in Keralan political circles about the touchy subject of black sand mining.
