Kaaliyan is a big investment Malayalam movie directed by newcomer Dr. S Mahesh. Features Prithviraj Sukumaran as the title character in Kaaliyan. The movie Kaaliyan is produced by Rajeev Govindan under the banner of Magic Moon Productions. Rajeev is the producer of Surhit films like Ordinary and Anarkali and is also a poet who has written songs for many films. BT Anilkumar is the author. The camera is handled by Sujith Vasudev, who is well known for his hits like Lucifer, Drishyam, and Ezra.

The movie is based on the courageous battle in the history of seventeenth-century, Venad (Travancore). The story develops through Kaaliyan who is the close confidant of Iravikutty Pillai, chief of the army of King Ravi Varma of Venad. The movie is also an effort to unearth Kaaliyan, Kunjirakottu kaali a genuine warrior, who was sidelined due to Iravikutty Pillai's popularity. Kunjirakottu kaali who fought with vigor and valor for sustaining the pride of Venad attained the name Kaaliyan.

The first audition for the movie was held on May 19 and 20 in Kochi. In addition, there will be auditions in other places outside Kerala.
